Grand Organiste de la Grande Loge du New-Jersey, il est surtout connu par deux recueils à caractère maçonnique :

• Mystic Chord date de 1866 et sa 11e édition (de 1897) est accessible ici ; les textes en sont publiés ici. Il comprend (pp. 5 à 81) des hymnes maçonniques, qui sont suivis (pp. 82-105) de miscellaneous music (chants profanes) et (pp. 106-9) d'un rituel de funérailles maçonniques (avec l'hymne de Pleyel, recopié de la p. 51 ; ce rituel doit être la copie d'un document plus officiel, puisqu'on trouve le même texte à la fin du Masonic Concordia de Ilsley). Un certain nombre de pièces sont d'autres compositeurs que Mabie. Il contient (p. 71) un Song for the twenty-fourth of June de sa composition.
• A Masonic musical service comprend 9 pages et parut en 1877. Il eut de multiples rééditions (notamment la 10e en 1889 et la 12e en 1910)

Mabie a également publié en 1868 Royal Arch Melodia où l'on peut lire (voir ici, p. 15) :

It has been urged with some force, that the beauties of the Masonic ritual cannot be evinced and stamped indelibly on the mind of the novitiate without the aid of music; the soul inspiring strains of which add power to the work, adorning its everliving truths with a grandeur that no other art can supply, stealing upon the senses and elevating the feelings so that purity of conception, without which, to those that tread the road that leadeth to exultation, light is but darkness and truth a shadow.

Le New York Times du 1er décembre 1884 écrit dans sa rubrique nécrologique
