Thomas Smith Webb (1771-1819) fit une belle carrière successivement dans l'édition, la fabrication de papier peint, la librairie et la filature de coton.

Mais il est surtout connu par son activité maçonnique débordante, qui fit de lui un leader du mouvement maçonnique aux Etats-Unis.

Deputy Grand High Priest of the United States, General Grand Chapter, il est considéré comme le père fondateur du Rite d'York,  et a publié dès 1797 la première édition de son Freemason's Monitor qui allait devenir pour de longues années une bible pour les maçons américains.

On peut y trouver (p. 329 à l'édition de 1808) son Most Excellent Master's Song.

En 1920, dans le supplément américain du Grove, on trouve à son sujet :

Webb, Thomas Smith (d. 1819), long prominent in Rhode Island as a Freemason and interested in developing lodge-music, was one of the founders of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston in 1815 and for two years its conductor.

He devoted mare of his time to music and, with others, formed the Handel and Haydn Philharmonic Society in Boston, he was its first president and conducted the Society’s first public concert in King’s Chapel on Christmas Day, 1815, with more than 100 participants. He also served as one of the soloists and even attained some fame later as a composer.
